As the current year comes to a close, it’s time to start making your resolutions and setting your goals for what you’d like to accomplish in 2019. While you look toward the future, it’s also important to reflect on what you’ve been able to accomplish over the past year, to acknowledge how far you have come and to help create your upcoming goals. We’ve put together some tips to keep in mind to help set yourself up for success as you make your New Year’s resolutions.
Take time to reflect on who you were at the beginning of 2018, and who you are now. What has changed in your life? How have your priorities shifted and evolved? Have you achieved any of the goals you previously set? Also evaluating where you are today can be helpful in establishing where you’d like to be at this time in 2019. Make sure to acknowledge your successes and changes, and use your personal growth to lay out next year’s goals.
Consider making your goals “SMART”: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-based. A “SMART” goal is specific, not vague — either you achieve it or you don’t. It is measurable, meaning that you can measure your success, like running a certain time in a race. It is attainable, in that you will be able to accomplish it based on your current and near-future capabilities. It is realistic, or something you will be able to do. Make a plan. If you’re looking to get in shape, for example, how do you plan to get there? Will you plan to go to the gym three times a week, or will you complete at-home workouts every day? Keep yourself accountable with a schedule or telling another person about your goal, and make sure to keep your motivation up with small rewards along the way to promote consistency and progress.
