We have spent the last few articles talking about spin bikes so let’s talk about the other bikes we carry too, such as the upright bike and recumbent bike.
Upright bikes
Upright bikes are a lot like outdoor riding as it places the rider in a similar body position, just that it gives you a more consistent workout. You work with the same muscle groups as you do with outdoor riding, which leans towards a whole body exercise -- working especially on your abdominal muscles because of the upright position you are in, as well as your upper body and arms.
Did you know that upright bikes demand more of you so they burn more calories than recumbent bikes do? More of your muscles will be engaged. It targets your abs, glutes, back, arms and even your neck. You will definitely get a more substantial workout and burn more calories using an upright bike.
If you are looking for variety and convenience, an upright bike is the best choice.
Recumbent bikes
Recumbent bikes are easier on the lower back (lumbar spine) due to the way that you sit in the bike. While an upright bike has you hunched over the handlebars, a recumbent bike encourages better spinal posture, making it gentler on all your joints.
It targets the hamstrings better than upright bikes. It is a particularly good transition exercise after injury or illness because it is gentle on your back and joints. It is safe and provides a low impact total body workout. Due to the low impact the recumbent bike reduces the risk of pain and can build strength.
You’re positioned in a comfortable reclined sitting position on a larger seat that's away from the pedals. This type of bike puts less stress on your upper body, joints, and low back. Your body is fully supported, which can make your workout less intense. Recumbent exercise bikes also feature a more natural seated position with the pedals in front of you, making your body feel more stable and comfortable on the machine.
If your back and hips are affected by rheumatoid arthritis, a recumbent bike may be easier to use due to the reclining position with your weight spread over your back and buttocks.
